A Cryptographic Compendium

Essentially a free online textbook on cryptographic techniques, written by John Savard. It is very comprehensive in its historical scope, though it by no means provides a rigorous introduction to the subject. Cryptography is a subject that can't really be well understood without at least a bit of background knowledge about groups, rings and fields, and ideally some exposure to elementary algebraic number theory.
